READING AND COMPREHENSION

FOOD FROM THE ‘HOOD
Student owned and operated
Many high school students worry about their future and what they are going to do for a loving. Only a few are quite sure about their vocation. Whatever the case may be, college education is a real challenge for most of teenagers because it is usually highly expensive.

This is what led the students of Crenshaw High School in South Central Los Angeles to start the Food from the ‘Hood project in 1992. FFTH is a company owned and operated by the student. It produces natural salad dressing with no preservatives or chemical additives.
All work is valued equally, so every student-owner must learn what’s needed to operate every part of the business. Therefore, garden work and media relations carry equal point value.
At the end of each academic year, based upon the percentage  of total points earned by each student, the “profits” are awarded as scholarships to a maximum of $15,000 a year per student. Any remaining “profits” are used to fund the community initiatives.
Up to now, thirty-one program participants have completed high school and ate taking post high school courses, funded in part by food from the ‘hood.
The program stresses development of values, skills, self-discipline and socially responsible business practices by operating, managing and maintaining a natural products line as well a ¼ acre organic garden.
Students-owners develop the recipes and marketing concepts for all products that carry the “Food from the ‘hood” name.
At the present Food from the hood products are available regionally at supermarkets and natural food stores or by mail order.

ONE MAN IN A BOAT
Fishing is my favourite Sport. I often fish for hours without catching anything. But this does not worry me. Some fishermen are unlucky. Instead of catching fish, they catch old boots and rubbish. I am even less lucky. I never catch anything — not even old boots.
After having spent whole morning on the river, I always go home with an empty bag. “You must give up fishing!” my friends say. “It’s a waste of time.” But they don’t realize one important thing. I’m not really interested in fishing. I’m only interested in sitting in a boat and doing nothing at all!
