AVALANCHE
It was about 2:30 pm. My brother Rex and our buddy
Fred had taken a break from our day of snowmobiling in Tumagain Pass, a valley
in Alaska. It was a perfect day: there was a fresh layer of snow and the sky
was bright blue. We were resting a while when a strong sound was heard and we
saw a gigantic slab of snow break away from the mountain.
For a fraction of a second I thought, “No,
this can’t be happening.”
There was no time to think. Without a word, the three
of us rushed for our snowmobiles. Rex and Fred stared their machines and began
tearing down the mountain. Mine didn’t move. “Oh my God, no. Not now!”the noise
behind me sounded like a runaway train. Then, the engine kicked into life, and
I shot out of there.
“Shit,” I thought, “I’m dead!”
I charged down the mountain at suicidal speed, trying
to stay ahead of a tidal wave of snow that was 30 feet high rolling for me at
100mph. “Faster! Faster!”I thought. There wasn’t a hope I’d outrun it – I knew
that. But making a mad dash was better than just letting the damn thing bury me.
Seconds later, a massive gust of wind, the powder blast – air and snow particles that
roars ahead of an avalanche - caught me up. It was like being hit by a
hurricane full of ice chunks. “Shit” I thought, “I’m dead.”
Seconds after the powder blast, a cloud of snow
swallowed me.
“Making a mad dash was better than just
letting the damn thing bury me.”
The force of the blow was incredible. I could taste
blood before a barrage of snow slabs knocked me off my snowmobile. I’m not sure
how to describe it - it was as if I had been bundled into a huge washing
machine. I didn’t know which way was up.
